About the Artist
Indira Bailey, is the 2011 recipient of the East Meets West: Islamic, Judaic and Western Influences in Morocco, Fulbright-Hays Scholarship. Indira was selected by the UCLA African Studies Center in Los Angeles,CA for a six-week comprehensive program of study, research acquisition of resource materials and curriculum writing this summer.
Indira was born in Plainfield, New Jersey. She is an extraordinary artist, illustrator and educator. Indira attended Pratt Institute receiving a B.F.A. in Illustration and M.A. in Educational Leadership & Supervision from Kean University. Bailey’s work demonstrates her pride, talent and her genuine interest in showing her experience as an African American woman and her travels abroad in a positive light.
Indira’s body of work covers several mediums: graphite, charcoal, acrylic but mainly oil on canvas. Even as a child, Indira knew she wanted to be a successful artist. Her goal was to illustrate the experience and daily life scenes of African Americans in a realistic and enjoyable venue. Ms. Bailey’s has exhibited artwork throughout the tri-state area.
Indira began teaching in the late 1990’s, inspiring children by introducing them into the world of art. Ms. Bailey did not look at art class as playtime. Her goal was to promote the creative thinking process in today’s youth. Indira conducts community based educational art workshops for children and professional development for adults.
She has received of a number of outstanding honors and awards, including a Fulbright Scholarship to South Africa and Japan. Ms. Bailey became the first recipient of the Inaugural South African Initiative Vision Award from Rutgers Graduate School of Education.
